2024 Young Women in Physics Meeting at the ENS Paris-Saclay

On the 14th and 15th of December 2024, the ENS Paris-Saclay welcomed 30 high school girls to take part in the Young Women in Physics Meeting. After a successful first installment the previous year, this event dedicated to physics once again offered a unique opportunity for these girls to immerse themselves in the world of this fascinating field, thanks to the support of the school, its patron and the students’ involvement.

A Rich and Inspiring Program

For two days, the participants had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the world of physics thanks to a varied and inspiring program:

  • Scientific conferences to delve deeper into the world of physics and discover current issues in the field.
  • Research workshops in groups to learn the scientific method and solve concrete problems.
  • Presentations to summarize the work done, to encourage teamwork and confidence while speaking in public.
  • A speed meeting with women in the professional field of physics and engineering, to share experiences and discover the diversity of careers in those fields.
  • Friendly snack with participants of the Ambitions Grandes Écoles programme, a wonderful occasion to share experiences and inspire one another.

To make sure that the participants could make the best of this experience, the ENS Paris-Saclay took care of their housing and lunches. This logistical comfort strengthened the team spirit, helped foster a friendly atmosphere and constructive discussions. The feedback from the participants is unanimous: these two days were memorable. They allowed these high school girls to picture themselves pursuing prestigious careers and feel supported in their ambitions.

Organizers, School and Patron: All Greatly Involved in the Process

This Young Women in Physics Meeting is a perfect representation of the School’s mission: training and inspiring future generations of scientists while promoting diversity and inclusion in scientific careers. The ENS Paris-Saclay promotes actions to introduce young girls to science, in order to inspire more of them to find their calling in science, a field much too often seen as masculine.

The ENS Paris-Saclay congratulates the organizers, speakers, participants and the QRT endowment fund, whose support played a significant part in the success of this event. This Young Women in Physics Meeting would have been impossible to organize if not for the exemplary involvement of the students who embodied the school’s value by talking on this task.

First-year student Suzy Derain decided to take part in this event once more, this time as an organizer.

I am actively involved in the Young Women in Physics Meeting to show that it is absolutely possible to study science and pursue a career in this field as a woman. I want to become an inspiring role model for other girls.
